Dear RSU 29 Community,
On Monday May 11th, citizens of our four communities passed the RSU 29 2026-2027 budget which reflected a 3.77% increase over last year. This budget maintains staffing and student programs while meeting the changes in state laws for pay and leave. We appreciate the work of the town managers and clerks in assisting us in this process. RSU 29 School Board has been fiscally conservative throughout the years and still remains the lowest district in Maine for per pupil expenditures while offering robust educational and co curricular activities for our 1185 students. We appreciate the continued support of our communities. We are tracking the proposed new school funding formula model (LD 2226) for Maine which should bring rural schools like ours some future funding.
We continue to look at other revenue sources through grants and special programs to keep our costs low. We need the support of the four communities on June 9th at the polls to approve the School Revolving Renovation Fund referendum, bringing $1,364,617 in state money for renovation projects. Those projects include removing asbestos at Houlton Middle High School and Houlton Elementary School and fixing insulation issues at the Southside School. To receive the state money, we have to do our part by setting up a zero percent interest free loan for 10 years, with annual payments of $58,483, which we already built into our budget. As Maine looks to use School Revolving Renovation Funds to help school districts with aging buildings, we know this money will help us tremendously without adding rising repair costs to our annual budgetary needs. Please vote on June 9th to receive School Revolving Renovation Funds!
